Doctorate of Nursing Practice, DNP (Post BSN)

Return to: Programs

The Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) is the terminal degree in advanced nursing practice. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) to DNP offers the BSN graduate a path to a clinical terminal degree in nursing. Along the way the student will take the usual core MSN courses, Primary Care NP specialty courses, and the DNP core. The student will be eligible to sit for a national nurse practitioner certification exam upon completion of the program. No MSN degree is conferred.

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from a Nationally Accredited Nursing program
  • BSN GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Beginning Spring 2021 any applicant with a BSN GPA of less than 3.5 will be required to submit scores for the GRE along with their application. Any application not meeting this requirement, if needed, will not be reviewed.
  • Current unrestricted Registered Nurse license from the state where you practice during practicum rotations
  • Passing score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if your native language is not English or if your BSN program was not conducted in English
  • Submission of all required application materials by posted deadlines (all required materials are listed in the online application)

State Authorization

Notice to admitted students: Students are admitted to our program as a resident of the particular state in which they resided at the time of application. If the student plans to move to a different state while in our program, or do any practicum hours in a different state, it is their responsibility to check our List of Approved States to make sure that they may continue in our program after moving to that state. No coursework or clinical/practicum hours can be done in any states except those listed on the authorized states list.  This includes military and travel nurses.

For more information, visit the UCCS State Authorization website.

Disclosure: Professional licensure requirements vary by profession and by state. The University of Colorado has not determined whether a course, program, certificate, or degree meets requirements for professional licensure outside of Colorado. Prior to enrolling, online distance students are strongly advised to check with the appropriate licensing board in their current or intended state of residence to ensure the online course, program, certificate, or degree will meet that state’s requirements. Contact information for your state’s Board of Nursing is available at their website.
