Philosophy and Sociology Double Major

The Sociology department and Philosophy department offer a double major for students interested in majoring in both degrees. 

General Requirements

  • A minimum of 120 hours must be completed with a cumulative CU grade point average of 2.0; at least 45 of these hours must be at the upper-division level (courses numbered 3000-4999).
  • No more than 54 hours of PHIL and no more than 54 hours of SOC course work can count towards the degree.
  • The last 30 hours of the degree must be completed while registered in the College of Letters, Arts & Sciences at UCCS.
  • Courses numbered below 1000 do not count towards degree completion.

Philosophy (30 hours)

  • The Philosophy major requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of PHIL course work and a minimum of 18 credit hours of upper-division (3000+ level) PHIL course work.
  • All PHIL courses must have a grade of “C” or better.

Sociology (30-31 hours)

  • The Sociology major requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of SOC work and a minimum of 18 credit hours of upperdivision (3000+ level) SOC course work.
  • All SOC courses must have a grade of “C” or better.

Note 1: SOC 3150 and 3070 should be completed prior to the senior year and must be taken at UCCS.
Note 2: Students who double count a Substantive course with the Summit, must take an additional 3 hours of electives to meet the 30 hour minimum hours for the major.

Philosophy Required Courses


Logic Course


Complete the required logic course below:

Philosophy Electives


Complete a minimum of 27 additional credit hours of Philosophy (PHIL) electives.  At least 18 hours of electives must be upper-division (3000+ level) courses.

Sociology Required Courses


Complete the following courses.

NOTE: SOC 3150 and 3070 should be completed prior to the senior year, and must be taken at UCCS.

Sociology Summit Experience


Complete either the Honors or Standard Track Summit Experience.

Honors Track

Students completing the honors track will receive departmental honors upon successful completion and graduation. Complete both courses below.

Standard Track

Students must enroll in one of the primary courses listed below.  In addition, students must request a permission number from the instructor or sociology program assistant for SOC 4785-The Sociology Capstone, a one-credit add-on special topics course 

Sociology Electives


  • Complete 6 additional hours of Sociology courses to fulfill total and upper-division hour requirements for the major.

Note: Students who double count a Substantive course with their Summit requirement will need to take an additional 3 hours of SOC electives.

Sociology Exit Exam


  • Complete the Sociology Exit Exam during the final semester of course work.
