Knowledge: deepen core knowledge in understanding historical processes, people, and events
Research: acquire research skills in locating sources, collecting data, and continuing productive inquiry on historical problems
Cognition: develop cognitive skills in making sense of information collected in research on historical questions
Writing: hone writing skills in crafting clear, succinct, logical, and persuasive argumentative prose
Reasoning: sharpen reasoning skills in following the flow of logic in historical argumentation

General Requirements

The student majoring in History must complete a minimum of 36 (maximum of 54) credit hours of history courses (of which 21 credit hours must be upper-division courses; 15 upper-division credit hours must be taken at the Colorado Springs campus).

Majors may choose any history faculty member as a counselor to advise them on the distribution of their courses.

Majors are required to have a grade of C (not C-) or better in their history courses.

Course Requirements

Western and American Civilizations

All History majors must select 6 credit hours from any of the following courses in American and Western Civilization (1010, 1020, 1030, 1040, 1510, 1520, 1530, 1540).

Western Civilization

American Civilization

Latin American, Asian, and Middle Eastern Civilizations

Students must select 6 credit hours from the following courses in Latin American, Asian, and Middle Eastern Civilization (HIST 1110, 1120, 1130, 1140, 1410, 1600, 1610).

Latin American Civilization

Asian Civilization

Middle Eastern Civilization

Upper Division Requirement

Of the 21 hours at the upper-division level requirement, 6 hours must come from any two of the following courses, OR from any upper-division History course that fulfills the Inclusiveness requirement in the Compass Curriculum. Note: this list will expand in the future as new courses are added.

Note:

These survey courses may be waived by the department only on adequate proof that the student has had equivalent education in these fields.

Majors must also take HIST 4990 (Senior Thesis) during their junior or senior year. History 4990 counts as 3 of the required 21 hours at the upper-division level.

Double Majors

A student with a double major (history and another major) must complete 30 credit hours of history courses, meeting the same course and grade requirements as above.
