Health Sciences, MS

The Department of Health Sciences offers a program leading to the degree of Master of Sciences with options in Sports Medicine, Sports Nutrition, and  Health Promotion. Graduate students pursue coursework in these areas of study and related disciplines (biology, chemistry, psychology, and sociology), providing the students with a diverse integrated curriculum of study.

Sports Nutrition Option - MS in Health Sciences


The Master of Science degree in Sport Nutrition is designed to prepare registered dietitians (RDs or RD eligible) and/or nationally and internationally recognized nutritionists. Non-RD students with a strong dual background in exercise science and nutrition are also eligible to apply to this program. Graduates are prepared to take leadership roles in providing nutrition services to high school, collegiate, recreational, elite, and professional athletes and active individual of all sports and genders. This degree prepares students for the Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) Examination offered to RDs through the Commission for Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA). This program also aims to provide international experiences and collaborations through a newly created network of Professionals in Nutrition for Exercise and Sport (PINES). The degree offers students three degree options: thesis, project , and Comprehensive Exam.

Health Promotion Option - MS in Health Sciences


The Master of Sciences degree in Health Promotion is designed to prepare students for advanced study and practice in Health Promotion related areas. Graduates are prepared to take leadership roles in designing, implementing, and evaluating health promotion programs in various public and private/work site agencies at local, state and national levels. The Health Promotion professionals trained in this program will possess the skills and knowledge to affect lifestyle choices and improve a person’s community or organizational health and wellness. Extra emphasis will be directed towards improving health and wellness in work site settings.

Sports Medicine Option - MS in Health Sciences


The Master of Science Degree in Sports Medicine provides the coursework and practical experience necessary to obtain advanced knowledge and skills in the discipline of Sports Medicine. The degree specifically offers the opportunity for those who are Certified Athletic Trainers to build upon their theoretical and clinical competencies beyond those gained at the undergraduate level. The program knowledge and practical experience allow the student to further develop theoretical knowledge and clinical skills, increase their ability to critically evaluate current sports medicine related literature, and obtain the ability to conduct clinically relevant sports medicine research. Opportunities are available to gain experience within the University Intercollegiate Athletic Programs, Secondary School Interscholastic Setting, Olympic Training Centers and Sports Medicine/Physical Therapy Clinics. There are three tracks: thesis track, project track, Comprehensive Exam track.

Program Prerequisites


  • Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university
  • Undergraduate Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Undergraduate Major GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Applicants must submit Parts I & II of the Graduate Application Form http://web.uccs.edu/gradschl/app/#forms
    • Signed in-state tuition form
    • 3 letters of reference
    • Selective service form (if applicable) 
    • 2 copies of all OFFICIAL transcripts
    • Application fee of $60
  • Completion of GRE. Scores must be submitted to UCCS
  • Completion of at least 6 hours of Anatomy and Physiology with lab
  • Completion of Nutrition I or comparable course (3 credits needed)
  • Completion of undergraduate Exercise Physiology with lab or comparable course (3 credits needed)
  • Completion of undergraduate Kinesiology course (3 credits needed)
  • Completion of undergraduate Principles of Strength and Conditioning or comparable course (3 credits needed)
  • Recommended:
    • Completion of undergraduate Inferential Statistics such as HSCI 2060

 Provisional acceptance can be extended with the requirement that students complete this coursework with a grade of B or higher within their first semester of graduate school.
