Administrator/Superintendent and Director of Special Education Preparation Programs

About the Program

Students who complete the 9-credit hour Administrator/Superintendent preparation program are eligible for a Colorado Administrator License. Students who complete the 9-credit hour Director of Special Education preparation program are eligible for a Colorado Director of Special Education License. Course content is based upon the Colorado Administrator Licensure and Director of Special Education Licensure standards and is approved by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE).


Focus of Study

As an active participant in this program, you will:

  • Develop as a leader through expanded self-knowledge and worldview.
  • Learn how to guide an educational team as they integrate recommendations from research with an assessment of the needs of a school community and create a plan for student success.
  • Explore the political and social implications of schooling and the educational requirements of a diverse, democratic, multicultural society.
  • Discover how technology can be utilized to enhance management and communication.
  • Develop school management competencies and leadership strategies.
  • Enhance your ability to ignite and inspire others!

Program Requirements

To be eligible for the Administrator/Superintendent License from the Colorado Department of Education, candidates must:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution
  • Pass the Colorado-approved content exam
  • Complete a program from a regionally accredited institution for the preparation of school administrators

To be eligible for the Special Education Director License from the Colorado Department of Education, candidates must:

  • Hold a master’s degree or higher in special education from a regionally accredited institution
  • Possess two years of licensed experience working with students with disabilities
  • Pass the Colorado-approved content exam
  • Complete a program from a regionally accredited institution for the preparation of administrators and special education directors

Administrator/Superintendent License (9 credits)

Special Education Director License (9 credits)

   3 Fall (meets on campus three times per semester)
   3 Spring (meets on campus five times per semester)
   3 Summer (fully online)

Students interested in completing both licenses must complete 12 credit hours

(LEAD 6860, LEAD 6870, LEAD 6875, and LEAD 6880)
