Curriculum and Instruction: Literacy, MA

The Curriculum and Instruction Department of Teaching and Learning offers a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction: Literacy. The program emphasizes reading and writing. The program includes core foundation courses that are college-wide offerings and courses that are specific graduate-level in literacy. In addition, we offer a “tiered” program in which MA students can continue if desired, their coursework and receive Reading Teacher and Reading Specialist endorsements from the state. 

Students must hold an initial or professional teaching license-will take 33 credit hours as described below.

Course Requirements

Foundation Courses - 12 Credit Hours

Literacy Courses - 21 Credit Hours

Reading Teacher Endorsement

Reading Teacher Endorsement-Students must hold an initial or professional teaching license PLUS 2 years of teaching experience and will take 33 credit hours PLUS 6 additional credit hours of coursework, described below.

Required 2 years teaching experience and M.A. in Reading/Literacy.
PLACE test for Reading Teacher required upon completion of coursework to add an endorsement.

Reading Specialist Endorsement

Reading Specialist Endorsement-Students must hold an initial or professional teaching license, PLUS 3 years of teaching experience, hold a Reading Teacher endorsement - 9 additional credit hours of coursework, described below.

Required 3 years teaching experience, M.A. in Reading/Literacy, and Reading Teacher Endorsement coursework.
PLACE test for Reading Specialist required upon completion of coursework to add an endorsement.
