In a letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne dismissed American women writers of the 1800s: “ink-stained women are, without a single exception, detestable.” This course celebrates American women writers of the 1800s through the lenses of inclusivity. Foregrounds print culture contexts and digital archives. Topics, authors, and genres may vary. Prer., ENGL 1310 and ENGL 1410 or equivalents.
