CRJU 5575 - Mental Health and Wellness in the Criminal Justice System3 Credits (Minimum) 3 Credits (Maximum)
This course examines the role of mental health and the intersection of offending, victimization, and the response of the criminal justice system. First, this course will focus on the role of mental health and potential risk factors for crime and violence. Additionally, this course will examine how committing, experiencing, witnessing, or responding to a crime can impact one’s mental health and wellness. Finally, this course will focus on a criminal justice system in response to individuals with mental health concerns. For instance, what policies shape how we screen, divert or process individuals with mental health concerns through the criminal justice system? What does treatment look like for individuals in and out of custody? Through an examination of contemporary policies and practices, students should understand how mental health is critically important in the criminal justice system.
