CJ 3230 - Restorative Justice

3 Credits (Minimum) 3 Credits (Maximum)

This course introduces the philosophy and principles of restorative justice, a growing alternative to the traditional retributive justice system. Students will examine specific models currently being used in juvenile diversion programs, schools, and court systems, with special emphasis on the efficacy, indications, and challenges of using a restorative approach. A discussion of the interplay of power, rights, and interests from the perspective of the victim, offender, state, and community will move students beyond the confines of traditional justice systems to understand social justice principles. Students will have a hands-on opportunity to learn and practice restorative dialogue skills to include questioning and reframing techniques that will be used to facilitate a restorative circle practice.
