The B.I. degree in Chemistry combines academic studies and professional training to prepare students for variety of careers in chemical sciences. The degree is structured so that students gain a depth of understanding in chemistry and a breadth of humanities, other sciences, business and entrepreneurship. The major is composed of a Chemistry core, Mathematics and Science Core, LAS General Education courses, Innovation core, and one of three Cross-discipline components. The Innovation core introduces students to entrepreneurship, grant and proposal writing, and team projects with regional organizations. These team projects align with Chemistry’s professional practice focus. The Cross-discipline component includes business, engineering technology, and globalization.

 

INNOVATION COURSES - 27 credits

Innovation: INOV 1010, 2010 or 2020, 2100, 3010 or 3020, and 4010 or 4020 - 15 credits
Entrepreneurship: ENTP 1000 and 4500  -  6 credits
Business Law: BLW 2010   - 3 credits
Innovation Elective - 3 credits

 

CROSS-DISCIPLINARY COURSES* - 15 credits

Students choose one concentration:
Business - 15 credits
Engineering Technology  - 15 credits
Globalization - 15 credits

CHEMISTRY COURSES - 35 credits

General Chemistry: CHEM 1030 and 1060  - 10 credits

  • CHEM 1010 and CHEM 1020 cannot be substituted for these requirements.
  • B.I. Chemistry majors are encouraged to take the honors section of Chem 1060.

Organic Chemistry: CHEM 3310, 3320, 3370, and 3380 - 10 credits

  • B.I. majors who have earned credits for CHEM 3330 and 3340 
                  must take CHEM 3380 or CHEM 4990.

Analytical Chemistry: CHEM 4170 - 4 credits
Biophysical Chemistry: CHEM 4500 - 3 credits
Biochemistry: CHEM 4830 - 3 credits
Chemistry Seminar: CHEM 4950 and 4960 - 2 credits
Chemistry Elective (upper division) - 3 credits

 

MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE COURSES - 13 credits

Mathematics: MATH 1330 - 4 credits
Physics: PES 1110 and 1160 - 5 credits
Biology: BIOL 1210 -  4 credits

 

GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES - 30 credits

Humanities and Social Science area requirements - 24 credits
English: ENGL 1310 and 1410 - 6 credits
