Undergraduate Certificate in Homeland Security and Hazards Management

This certificate is designed to provide students with foundational knowledge in the areas of homeland security and hazards management. Through the certificate courses, students will learn about a range of threats, including terrorism, natural disasters, critical infrastructural protection, and cybersecurity and intelligence, among others. Additionally, students will explore the role agencies in both the public and private sectors play in predicting, preventing, and responding to contemporary homeland security threats and hazards facing the nation.

Students who successfully complete the certificate will have it notated on their transcript and will receive a printed certificate of completion from the School of Public Affairs.

Policies and Procedures

Students wanting to pursue the certificate must complete the declaration form on the SPA website.

General Requirements

The certificate consists of four courses totaling twelve credit hours of undergraduate coursework. A grade of C or better is required in each course counting toward the certificate.

Required Courses


This certificate requires completion of CJ 3400 and CJ 3600, plus two additional courses chosen from CJ 2051, CJ 2052, and CJ 4400 to meet the required 12 credit hours (4 courses). Certificate courses may be taken in any order.
