ENGL 4200 - The Eighteenth-Century British Novel: Defoe to Austen

Traces the emergence of the novel from its subliterary roots in early 18th century to its stunning transformation by early 19th century. Examines historical context, narrative techniques, theory of character, and major themes. Authors include Defoe, Richardson, Fielding, Sterne, and Austen. Prer., ENGL 3000. Meets with ENGL 5200.
