Health Sciences, MSc

The Department of Health Sciences offers a program leading to the degree of Master of Sciences with options in Sports Medicine, Sports Nutrition, and  Health Promotion. Graduate students pursue coursework in these areas of study and related disciplines (biology, chemistry), providing the students with a diverse integrated curriculum of study.

Sports Nutrition Option - MSc in Health Sciences


The Master of Science degree in Sport Nutrition is designed to prepare registered dietitians (RDs or RD eligible) and/or nationally and internationally recognized nutritionists. Non-RD students with a strong dual background in exercise science and nutrition are also eligible to apply to this program. Graduates are prepared to take leadership roles in providing nutrition services to high school, collegiate, recreational, elite, and professional athletes and active individual of all sports and genders. This degree prepares students for the Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) Examination offered to RDs through the Commission for Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA). This program also aims to provide international experiences and collaborations through a newly created network of Professionals in Nutrition for Exercise and Sport (PINES). The degree offers students three capstone options: thesis, project, and comprehensive exam.

Health Promotion Option - MSc in Health Sciences


The Master of Sciences degree in Health Promotion is designed to prepare students for advanced study and practice in Health Promotion related areas. Graduates are prepared to take leadership roles in designing, implementing, and evaluating health promotion programs in various public and private/work site agencies at local, state and national levels. The health promotion professionals trained in this program will possess the skills and knowledge to affect lifestyle choices and improve a person’s community or organizational health and wellness. Extra emphasis will be directed towards improving health and wellness in work site settings.

Sports Medicine Option - MSc in Health Sciences


The Master’s of Science in Sports Medicine has two tracks: 1) Athletic Training Track: a post-certification athletic training program designed to deepen the knowledge and broaden the skill set of the athletic trainer and 2) Strength & Conditioning Track: a practical based strength and conditioning program designed to enhance discipline concepts through practical experiences that focus on special populations and tactical training.

Benefits of the program include: gaining advanced insight into the evaluation of athletic injuries, including a comprehensive investigation of the spine; utilizing a health behavior model to frame patient/client outcomes; enhancing knowledge and skills in both rehabilitation and manual therapy OR strength & conditioning; providing research opportunities related to athletic training, strength and conditioning, nutrition and health behavior; accessing leadership opportunities in the athletic setting; providing advanced care to the physically active population through a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment; providing opportunities with the United State Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine and Strength & Conditioning Departments.
