Mathematics is a dynamic field of study, which is constantly evolving in response to external challenges coming from applications and internal challenges coming from unsolved problems. It plays a central role in science and engineering, and a key supporting role in economics, business and government. Students who are analytical by nature, who enjoy thinking critically, and who appreciate a deep understanding of what they study may find mathematics attractive, stimulating, and challenging. The Department of Mathematics offers a curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mathematics; this degree is well-suited for students aiming toward a variety of mathematical careers in industry or secondary education, or planning for graduate education.

General Information

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics requires the following:

  • A minimum of 46 credit hours of MATH course work. At least 31 of those hours must be upper division (courses numbered 3000 or higher).
  • A grade of C or better in courses applied to the major.
  • A minimum 2.0 GPA must be maintained in all MATH course work.
  • No more than 60 credit hours of MATH course work may apply to the bachelor’s degree.
  • An Exit Interview with the Mathematics department is required prior to graduation.
  • All Mathematics majors are required to meet with a faculty advisor in the Mathematics department during their first year as Mathematics majors.

Additional course work is required to complete the Mathematics, BS degree. Please see the advising guide on the Academic Advising website for more information.

Mathematics Major Options

The following options, or tracks, may be added to the Mathematics major. Options may have different course, grade, GPA, or hour requirements.  See below for more information.

  • Pure Math
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Statistics
  • Flexible
  • Secondary Education - UCCSTeach

Departmental Honors

The UCCS Mathematics Department offers a special track that leads to departmental honors, noted on the diploma and transcript upon graduation, to qualified students pursuing a BS in Mathematics.

Admission to the honors track is by application only; the application form is available on the Mathematics department website. Please complete the form and return it to the chair of the undergraduate committee. Students should typically apply by the end of their junior year.

Honors Requirements

To be awarded honors after an application is accepted, a student must:

  • Maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.0, and a GPA of at least 3.5 in mathematics courses.
  • Maintain a GPA of at least 3.3 in all Math courses numbered higher than 4000.
  • Complete an undergraduate research project under the supervision of a mathematics faculty advisor. A written report based on the project must be submitted for approval to the Undergraduate Committee of the Mathematics Department.
  • Present the results of the above research project at a conference or a seminar.

Please contact the department’s Undergraduate Committee with any questions.
