The Teacher Education and Licensure Program (TELP) is a four-year program that allows students to earn a degree from the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences (LAS) and to meet licensure requirements in elementary or secondary education. This program includes a one-year intensive combination of methods courses and fieldwork known as the Professional Year. Upon successful completion of the Professional Year, teacher candidates are recommended for teacher licensure from the State of Colorado in elementary education (grades K-6) and secondary (grades 7-12) English language arts, social studies, and world languages. Undergraduate students seeking a baccalaureate degree from LAS select an approved major and fulfill the requirements for both the BA/BS and licensure. Candidates who have already earned a baccalaureate degree apply for the Licensure Only (post-baccalaureate) option with the opportunity to apply nine credits toward the MA in Curriculum and Instruction. The undergraduate and post-baccalaureate programs have their own admission processes beyond the admission requirements of the University.
TELP leads to an initial teaching license in the State of Colorado. Post-baccalaureate students have the option to take three of the four core classes at the graduate level and apply them to an MA in Curriculum & Instruction within a five-year period.
Undergraduates, however, cannot use those credits toward both their BA degree and their MA degree.
There are two separate strands of licensure for both undergraduates and post-baccalaureate students: elementary and secondary. The course requirements for the two strands differ and are listed on our website.

In order to receive an initial license or added endorsement, students will need to complete the following exam(s):
- PRAXIS II Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects #5001
- A minimum of 2 out of 4 subtests (reading, math, social studies, science) must be passed by July 15 just prior to Professional Year classes. All 4 subtests must be passed prior to beginning the final semester of student teaching (IELM 4950) or by December 15th - Teacher Candidates will NOT be allowed to student teach unless they have passed this exam.
When registering to take the Praxis exam(s), students need to send their scores to UCCS (4874) and Colorado Department of Education (7040).

Post Baccalaureate Requirements
Candidates who already have a bachelor’s degree will apply for the licensure-only option. Licensure requires 45 credit hours with the option of applying 9 of those hours toward a general Master of Arts in Curriculum.
UCCSTeach Option: Candidates interested in secondary Math or Science join UCCSTeach to complete their licensure requirements for Colorado. See last section of this page.

UCCSTeach - Secondary Teacher Licensure Program for Math/Science Majors
The UCCSTeach program at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs is an inquiry-based teacher license program for undergraduate STEM majors and post-baccalaureate STEM professionals who are interested in pursuing secondary mathematics and science education. By partnering with academic departments, undergraduates in the UCCSTeach program can obtain both a STEM bachelor’s degree and a secondary teaching license. These academic departments include Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Engineering Education, Mathematics, and Physics. Post-baccalaureates in STEM can also complete the UCCSTeach curriculum to obtain a secondary teaching license. The overarching goal of the UCCSTeach program is to provide students with strong STEM content knowledge and quality teaching experiences in order to become highly effective secondary STEM educators.
The UCCSTeach program is collaboratively housed between the College of Education and the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences with a co-director representing each college. The UCCSTeach program, a replication of the national UTeach model, is built on strong research-based foundations. Several hallmarks of the UCCSTeach program include:
- Early and repeated teaching opportunities- in field-based courses. UCCSTeach pre-service candidates begin the program in a Step 1 course and are provided with immediate opportunities to work in K-12 classrooms.
- A focus on inquiry-based instruction. The UCCSTeach program includes a strong focus on leveraging inquiry-based teaching models to support student learning. Research supports that this style of teaching can improve learning outcomes and engagement among students of all levels.
- Targeted support from faculty and staff with diverse expertise. Our students receive individualized attention and guidance from experienced faculty and staff who have years of teaching and administrative experience in education.
