Learning Outcomes

  • Offers highly qualified UCCS sociology majors the opportunity of pursuing the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Sociology and Masters of Arts (MA) in Sociology concurrently.
  • Allows for up to 9 credit hours to be used for both the BA and MA.

General Requirements

  • The requirements for the Accelerated program are equivalent to the aggregate of the BA and MA degrees, except that up to 9 credit hours can be applied toward both the BA and MA requirement.
  • A student will be considered eligible to continue upon meeting the following minimum standards and criteria: completion of the requirements for a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, and maintenance of a minimum cumulative overall GPA of 3.25 and Sociology GPA of 3.50.

Program Requirements

  • Once admitted into the Sociology Accelerated MA program (while an undergraduate student), accelerated students complete three graduate courses with a minimum grade of 3.25 in each course. They must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25 in all coursework and in coursework applied to their major.
  • If students take a combined 4000/5000 level course at the 4000 level, they cannot take the same combined course at the 5000 level.
  • Students should speak with undergraduate advising about interest in this program at their next advising appointment.
  • If it is determined that a student currently meets the requirements, the student will fill out an intent application. This application states that the student currently intends, and is eligible, to begin taking dual-counting courses during the bachelor’s degree (i.e., graduate level courses that will be used towards the bachelor’s and master’s degree). This does not admit the student to the graduate program. The intent application must be filled out in a web browser to submit through the system correctly. Check the Graduate School website for instructions.
  • Once the intent application is approved by the sociology program, the applicant is allowed to take dual counting courses.
  • During the final year of the bachelor’s degree, the student will apply to the graduate program using the online graduate school application. If still eligible, the student will be admitted to the Accelelerated Masters program, which allows the graduate level courses taken as a bachelor’s student to count toward the master’s degree as well.
