Traces the emergence of the novel from its subliterary roots in early 18th century to its stunning transformation by the early 19th century. Examines historical context, narrative techniques, theory of character, and major themes. Authors include Defoe, Richardson, Fielding, and Austen. Prer., ENGL 1310 or validated equivalent, ENGL 2000, ENGL 2010, and ENGL 3000. Meets with ENGL 4200.
